Netwrix surveyed 1,309 IT and security professionals worldwide and released findings specifically for the education sector based on the collected data.

It reveals that 77% of organizations in the education sector spotted a cyberattack on their infrastructure within the last 12 months, up from 69% in 2023. The most common attack vectors were similar to those among other industries: Phishing, user account compromise, and ransomware or other malware attacks.

In the education sector, almost half (47%) of organizations faced unplanned expenses to fix security gaps because of a security incident. Moreover, one in seven of those organizations incurred compliance fines, and each tenth reported changes in senior leadership and lawsuits.

“An incident can reveal security gaps such as excessive admin privileges, dormant accounts, weak or unchanged passwords, default passwords or configurations, and unpatched systems due to negligence or lack of knowledge. Fixing a gap might not immediately require spending additional money but will definitely require time from the IT security team. In other words, addressing the root cause of a security incident results in additional investment, in either money or effort, or both,” says Dirk Schrader, VP of Security Research and Field CISO EMEA at Netwrix.

“In the aftermath of a breach, organizations must prioritize remediation steps to reduce risks moving forward. For example, the immediate response may include patching software on the most critical servers and adding a manual review step on certain operations. Longer-term remediation may have to wait for the next budget cycle and require additional software, services engagement, or headcount,” says Ilia Sotnikov, Security Strategist at Netwrix.

Intel will launch its first U.S. registered apprenticeship program for manufacturing facility technicians in Arizona. This effort is in partnership with the Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA), the Phoenix Business and Workforce Development Board, the SEMI Foundation, Maricopa Community Colleges District (MCCD), and Fresh Start Women’s Foundation. Over the next five years, Intel aims to train apprentices who will become full-time employees from day one. Upon completing the one-year program, participants will earn a certificate and college credit.

“Facility technicians are responsible for the setup, maintenance and performance of the complex machinery used to build semiconductors. There is a very small pool of trained applicants with this specific skill set. Intel’s new apprenticeship program addresses this challenge by providing hands-on training in our fabs, expanding the semiconductor talent pipeline to help meet the workforce demand of the future.” –Christy Pambianchi, Intel Chief People Officer

Traditional recruiting methods alone are not enough to meet the growing demand for skilled semiconductor technicians. According to SIA, the semiconductor industry is expected to add nearly 115,000 jobs by 2030, and roughly 58% of these new jobs risk going unfilled. Of these unfilled jobs, 39% are projected to involve technician roles, most of which require certificates or two-year degrees.

Apprenticeships offer a practical and effective way to train individuals for these roles, benefiting both individuals and organizations. Apprentices gain valuable skills, experience and industry-specific knowledge, leading to improved career opportunities and contributing to a more skilled and competitive workforce. Apprenticeships are a way to attract diverse talent with greater-than-average retention, with 90% of apprentices staying with their employer after program completion.

The one-year program will involve a mix of classroom instruction and on-the-job training. Participants will be hired as Intel employees as they learn the core competencies needed for facility technician roles, including hand-tool basics with mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and vacuum systems; electrical basics and electronics; handling of chemicals and gases; and communications skills, problem solving and critical thinking. Intel’s apprenticeship program provides more technical skills than other opportunities within the industry, focusing on hands-on skills in gas and chemical facility training.

This is one of several commitments Intel has made to workforce development, investing more than $250 million in academic collaborations over the past five years. Intel continues to partner with community colleges and nonprofits in Arizona and Oregon through the two-week Quick Start pilot program and in New Mexico with a one- or two-term Mechatronics certificate program. All aim to support the semiconductor industry’s growing employment needs and spark interest in new career pathways among under-resourced communities.

In Ohio, Intel is working with the Ohio Association of Community Colleges’ Semiconductor Collaboration network to launch programs and career pathways that aim to meet the demands of the semiconductor sector, foster economic development and provide accessible education across the state.

Additionally, Intel’s AI for Workforce Program is a first-of-its-kind community college program offered free to participating schools. It provides more than 600 hours of artificial intelligence (AI) content, professional training for faculty and implementation guidance.

Intel will continue to prioritize workforce development initiatives that create inclusive pathways, improve people’s lives and enable the company to create life-changing technology. With proposed CHIPS and Science Act funding, Intel hopes to expand the new apprenticeship program to its other U.S. sites.

LG Business Solutions USA is assisting educators and administrators in quickly incorporating high-engagement learning tools into Google-based classrooms. The new LG CreateBoard, showcased at the ISTELive 24 ed-tech conference, offers Google compatible innovations aimed at providing powerful interactive opportunities and seamless integration with Google’s app suite.

According to Victoria Sanville, education director at LG Business Solutions USA, the Google compatible solutions empower schools to maximize the utility of Google’s leading cloud education platform and engage students with interactive lessons seamlessly.

“The best kind of technology is one that’s so intuitive that it’s easy to use the first time and so powerful and functional that it offers improved results for users – and that’s exactly what our new Google Compatible classroom solutions do,” Sanville said. “The LG CreateBoard line has already helped educators across the U.S. incorporate dynamic lesson plans and utilize digital resources, and adding Google Compatibility not only increases the options and power of the device, it also makes it the optimal choice for districts or schools that use Google Classroom apps.”

The new LG CreateBoard TR3DK Gen 2 with Google Play comes with the Google Play store pre-installed, making it easy to access a large variety of verified third-party apps curated by Google. It is an ideal choice for organizations already using Google education services, and it is authorized by Google to distribute Google Mobile Services and features Google Play Protect Service to constantly monitor for any suspicious behavior. This new LG CreateBoard model is powered by Android 13 (pre-installed), which lets users customize their apps by color, theme and language.

The ChromeOS Flex-certified slot-in Open Pluggable Spec (OPS) (model OPS-C001) expands educators’ options by enabling full use of the ChromeOS Flex operating system on new and existing LG CreateBoards. For ultimate flexibility, LG installers slot in the operating system during the installation process on behalf of the customer to provide a familiar and powerful user experience similar to a Chromebook.

Adding ChromeOS Flex compatibility to the LG CreateBoard turns the display into a Single Sign-On (SSO) device through which teachers and students can sign in to their Google Account and automatically be connected to services such as Google Classroom, Google Workspace apps including Google Meet, and other learning management services without requiring additional logins. It’s an ideal solution for classrooms or schools standardized on the Google ecosystem or using Chromebooks for students, offering the benefits of the full Chrome browser including extensions and Google Admin Console.

Sanville explained that the award-winning LG CreateBoard line provides schools, educators and students with a powerful multi-touch interactive digital board that helps increase engagement, offers special features like multi-device casting, live annotations and recordings, and it offers QR-code based login to enable fast, reliable user experiences even in rooms used by various instructors throughout the day.

LG’s ISTELive 24 booth offers visitors additional opportunities to sample and learn about LG Chromebooks and All-in-One Chrome Flex Cloud Devices that each offer Google compatibility, as well as a 136-inch All-in-One DVLED (direct-view light emitting diode) display, a four-panel videowall, an LG Touch Kiosk with Kokomo 24/7 Visitor Management Software, an LG One: Quick Flex display with Kokomo 24/7 Telehealth Software and LG ProBeam laser projectors.

LG’s experts are on hand in the booth to explain the benefits of LG ConnectedCare DMS, a cloud solution for remotely monitoring, controlling, and managing the status of LG CreateBoard and TV signage devices installed in educational environments.

Demonstrated for the first time at ISTELive 24 is LG’s new value-packed smart TV display solution developed specifically for education environments: the UM340E Series of 4K Ultra HD connected displays available in 65-, 55- and 50-inch diagonal screen sizes. Content such as emergency alerts, images, videos, audio messages, and live streaming can also be shared from the primary system to UM340E commercial displays, and IT managers can remotely install and update the apps on selected devices, which helps lessen the need for on-site response.

“The newest wave of LG education technologies offer increased flexibility and advanced capabilities to meet the broad range of student and faculty needs in increasingly diverse learning environments,” Sanville added.

Teachers who use LG products can also learn about the LG Educators Program at the show. This program allows educators who are passionate about ed-tech to showcase their experiences and expertise through LG’s social media channels, helping innovative ideas and new technology opportunities reach a much wider audience. As a special bonus, LG experts are on site at LG’s booth to showcase CreateBoard Demos with AI for existing LG Educators. Interested parties can easily sign up for the LG Educator program at the booth through a convenient QR code.

Sylabs introduces a new certification program centered on the Singularity container platform. Originating from the open-source SingularityCE, this platform has emerged as an essential resource for users in extensive computing environments engaged in vital tasks such as data science, artificial intelligence (AI), computer-driven analytics, simulation, and high-performance computing (HPC).

Following Sylabs’ previously released Singularity Containers 101 curriculum, the Singularity Containers certification aims to equip both professionals and students with advanced knowledge of container technology. The Singularity Containers certification spans 16 distinct sections, focusing on a theoretical understanding of the technology and the practical use of the platform. The knowledge shared with participants will include running containers, building images, converting Docker images to SIF, multi-stage builds, using Singularity Container Services, signing and verifying images, and more.

“HPC, AI/ML, and scientific computing are indispensable technologies, and as such advanced container platforms that can handle these larger workloads are absolutely essential,” said Adam Hughes, CTO of Sylabs. “Singularity allows users to build a container on virtually any system, including their laptop, that can be run on many of the world’s largest HPC clusters, local university or corporate clusters, a single server, the cloud, or a workstation down the hall. With this SingularityCE certification course, Sylabs is providing students and professionals with the skills they need to design and run containers in a variety of efficient and adaptable environments.”

As a container platform, Singularity is unique in that it is tailor-made for the needs of large, multi-tenant computing environments where security and efficient resource utilization are paramount. Singularity ensures that complex workflows can be managed securely and effectively without impacting other users or system stability. Build on your laptop, a hardware specific environment and run anywhere.

Interoperability in the Open Container Initiative (OCI) Ecosystem

Built for the needs of high performance computing (HPC), Singularity has been shaped by the community to complement and enhance the existing container ecosystem. It is designed to be interoperable with Open Container Initiative (OCI)-compliant container platforms, such as Docker, and integrate seamlessly with workflow systems like Nextflow. This approach does not seek to replace these systems but rather to augment them, providing specialized capabilities that address the unique requirements of HPC workflows while benefiting from the widespread adoption and support of established container technologies.

Although the course is as streamlined as possible, potential participants should have a background in computer science with some Linux command-line experience. With the right background, professionals working in the industry and current students can expect to greatly enhance their skills in containerization workflows for large-scale environments.

To learn more about how the “Singularity Containers Certification Course” can empower both professionals and students in the exciting world of container technologies, visit the website here

In another example of listening to feedback from schools, all LG CreateBoards will receive an update to integrate with the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), the U.S. government’s digital format for exchanging emergency alerts, coming in the second quarter of this year. This enables each CreateBoard to be connected as an end point and automatically provide guidance, directions or information in the event of an emergency.

As schools, businesses and municipal organizations increasingly invest in digital technologies, the LG CreateBoard’s new Google EDLA certification and emergency alert capability, along with an up-to 40-point multi-touch surface and tools for content creation, sharing and management, will enable more efficient, productive and safe learning sessions regardless of users’ technical expertise.

The new CreateBoard will be joined in the “Google Zone” of LG’s FETC booth by a desktop thin client and All-in-One Thin Client monitor. Both will feature ChromeOS Flex, a cloud-first platform that provides protection against ransomware by default to keep all schoolwork safe and secure. There will also be an LG Chromebook 11TC50Q, which runs the speedy, simple and secure Chrome Operating System. Rounding out the Google integrations will be a 55-inch commercial TV, LG’s first with Android TV, Google’s operating system for smart TVs and streaming devices.

In addition to the Google Zone, LG’s booth will house three other zones: “Digital Tools to Untether the Teacher,” “Esports Labs” and “School Administration and Security.” Other highlights include two touch displays, LG’s 27KC3PK-C Kiosk and One:Quick Flex, integrating with Kokomo24/7’s centralized access control and health software platforms, Kokomo HOSTTM and Kokomo WELLNESSTM, to demonstrate a school check-in display and telehealth display respectively.

Plus, a variety of digital display and projection technologies will be on offer. All displays and projectors are backed by LG ConnectedCare, which makes it easy to set up, schedule, and update content across a variety of devices, allowing schools to inform students and faculty wherever LG technologies are on campus.

A demo of the new CreateBoard will be on display at FETC 2024 from Jan. 23-26 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

Zscaler, Inc. announced the release of the Zscaler ThreatLabz 2023 Enterprise IoT and OT Threat Report. This year’s report provides an in-depth look at malware activity over a six-month period, analyzing approximately 300,000 blocked attacks on IoT devices secured by the Zscaler Zero Trust Exchange™ platform. The high number of attacks on IoT devices represents a 400% increase in malware compared to the previous year. The increasing frequency of malware attacks targeting IoT devices is a significant concern for OT security, as the mobility of malware can facilitate movement across different networks, potentially endangering critical OT infrastructure.

ThreatLabz focused on understanding IoT device activity and attributes via device fingerprinting and analyzing the IoT malware threat landscape. As more industries, organizations and individuals continue to rely on internet-connected devices, the threat from malware and legacy vulnerabilities increases. Organizations can gain visibility into IoT device traffic and minimize IoT security risks by adopting a zero-trust architecture.

“Weak enforcement of security standards for IoT device manufacturers coupled with the proliferation of shadow IoT devices at the enterprise level poses a significant threat to global organizations. Often, threat actors target ‘unmanaged and unpatched’ devices to gain an initial foothold into the environment,” said Deepen Desai, Global CISO and Head of Security Research, Zscaler. “To address these challenges, I encourage organizations to enforce zero trust principles when securing IoT and OT devices – never trust, always verify, and assume breach. Organizations can eliminate lateral movement risk by utilizing continuous discovery and monitoring processes to segment these devices.”

Consistent growth in attacks

With the steady adoption of IoT and personal connected devices, the ThreatLabz report found an increase of over 400% in IoT malware attacks year-over-year. The growth in cyber threats demonstrates cyber criminals persistence and ability to adapt to evolving conditions in launching IoT malware attacks.

Additionally, research indicates that cybercriminals are targeting legacy vulnerabilities, with 34 of the 39 most popular IoT exploits specifically directed at vulnerabilities that have existed for over three years. The Mirai and Gafgyt malware families continue to account for 66% of attack payloads, creating botnets from infected IoT devices that are then used to launch denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against lucrative businesses. Botnet-driven distributed DDoS attacks are responsible for billions of dollars in financial losses across industries around the globe. In addition, DDoS attacks pose a risk to OT by potentially disrupting critical industrial processes and even endangering human lives.

Manufacturing top targeted industry – Education being taught a lesson

Manufacturing and retail accounted for nearly 52% of IoT device traffic, with 3D printers, geolocation trackers, industrial control devices, automotive multimedia systems, data collection terminals, and payment terminals sending the majority of signals over digital networks. However, the quantity of device traffic has created opportunities for cybercriminals, and the manufacturing sector now sees an average of 6,000 IoT malware attacks every week. Moreover, these substantial IoT malware attacks can disrupt critical OT processes, which are integral in many industrial manufacturing plants like automotive, heavy manufacturing, and plastic & rubber. This creates long-term challenges for security teams at manufacturing businesses but also demonstrates that industrial IoT holds a substantial lead in adopting unique IoT devices (nearly three times more than other sectors). This increase is critical as manufacturing organizations continue adopting IoT tools for automation and digitization of legacy infrastructure.

Education is another sector that suffered from outsized attention from cybercriminals in 2023, with the propagation of unsecured as well as shadow IoT devices within school networks providing attackers with easier access points. The wealth of personal data stored on their networks has made educational institutions particularly attractive targets, leaving students and administrations vulnerable. In fact, the ThreatLabz report found IoT malware attacks in the education sector increased by nearly 1000%.

The United States and Mexico are the most targeted

Findings show that the United States is a top target for IoT malware authors with 96% of all IoT malware distributed from compromised IoT devices in the United States.

In 2023, Mexico experienced the most infections, with 46% of all IoT malware infections. In fact, three of the top four most infected countries (Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia) are all Latin American countries.

Safeguarding against IoT/OT attacks with the Zscaler Zero Trust Exchange™

The Zscaler Zero Trust Exchange platform is a holistic approach to zero trust security, verifying identity and context, applying access controls, and enforcing policies before brokering a secure connection between a device and an application from anywhere, and on any network.

Zscaler protects enterprise networks using the Zero Trust Platform by leveraging Zscaler Internet Access™ (ZIA™), whose identity-driven access and risk-based, comprehensive security protects the exchange of telemetry between IoT devices and corporate networks.

Zscaler protects the security of enterprise networks with the Zero Trust Exchange platform, which utilizes Zscaler Privileged Remote Access to provide remote workers and third-party vendors with clientless remote desktop access to sensitive RDP, SSH, and VNC production systems without having to install a client on unmanaged devices or log into jump hosts and VPNs. This means remote employees or third-parties can access and service OT devices without compromising the security of the network or the critical infrastructure it powers.
