Perforce Software unveiled the results of their annual open source survey — the 2023 State of Open Source Report. The report is based on data from a global survey of open source users created through a collaboration between OSI and OpenLogic by Perforce, a provider of technical support and services for community open source software.

The 2023 State of Open Source Report sheds light on the factors driving open source software adoption, the most in-demand open source technologies, and the challenges that teams using OSS most frequently encounter. The report also provides key insights into the growing maturity of open source strategies across organizations of all sizes, industries, and geographic regions.

According to the report, 80% of organizations increased their use of open source software over the last 12 months. Four out of five companies rely on OSS for a wide range of business-critical applications including data and database management, containers and container orchestration, and DevOps and SDLC tooling.

The report reveals, however, that some obstacles persist. In every technology category surveyed, organizations repeatedly cited lack of personnel with expertise as one of the top challenges.

“Clearly, more technical support is needed for open source technologies, as personnel experience and proficiency is highly ranked again this year as a support concern across organizations regardless of size,” said Javier Perez, Chief OSS Evangelist at Perforce Software and the primary author of the report. “In-house support of OSS requires expert-level knowledge of not just one technology, but multiple technologies that form software stacks.”

“This report illuminates why open source skills continue to be in high demand,” said Rod Cope, CTO at Perforce Software. “Open source communities are not timebound by any SLAs, which means you could be waiting days or even weeks to get technical support if there are skill shortages in your organization.”

Maintaining security policies and compliance and keeping up with updates and patches also pose difficulties, especially for organizations that have not yet migrated off of end-of-life (EOL) software. For example, the report shows that 15% of all organizations (and 20% of large organizations) are still running AngularJS — the exact same percentage as reported the previous year — even though AngularJS has been EOL since December 31, 2021.

In spite of these challenges, the 2023 State of Open Source Report indicates a positive trend in the direction of open source strategy and maturity. 35% of survey respondents have OSS security and compliance policies; 28% have legal teams familiar with open source licensing; and more than 25% of organizations in most industries generate a Software Bill of Materials (SBOM), an important first step toward greater security and transparency. These numbers suggest that more companies are transitioning from being consumers of OSS to active participants. In fact, more than a third (37%) say they are contributing to open source projects and organizations.

The final question on the survey addressed future priorities for OSS adoption. When asked to rank technologies in relation to their desire to implement them in the next 18 months, survey respondents chose AI/ML/DL technologies as the most desirable, edging out Kubernetes and Kubernetes Operators by 1%.

“Demand for services powered by AI/ML/DL technologies is exploding,” said Stefano Maffulli, Executive Director of OSI. “The vast amounts of data these applications ingest give rise to serious implications when it comes to licensing and privacy in this ‘growth at all costs’ era. The Open Source Initiative is researching the AI/ML/DL space to help enterprises and individuals get clear definitions of their rights and obligations when it comes to data and AI systems.”

The 2023 State of Open Source Report is now available to OSI members, and to the general public here.

Perforce Software announces Perfecto’s latest support for Flutter integration testing for native mobile applications.

Flutter is an open source framework by Google that transforms the app development process by empowering Dart developers and programmers to build, test, and deploy mobile, web, desktop, and embedded apps from a single codebase.

There are three types of testing for Flutter apps: Unit, Widget and Integration tests. Perfecto proudly supports Integration Testing, also known as end-to-end testing or GUI testing, the most comprehensive testing type out of the three. Flutter integration testing is performed via a configurable Gradle plugin that allows users to install and run the iOS and Android tests in parallel and at scale.

“We are committed to support up and coming frameworks as well as the popular frameworks that our customers use to ensure the quality of their Omni-channel apps.” said Stephen Feloney, VP of Products – Continuous Quality at Perforce. “Flutter is the latest example of this commitment.”

Testers can greatly benefit by testing their native mobile Flutter applications with Perfecto. Perfecto is secure, reliable and takes care of all the maintenance associated with cloud-infrastructure and mobile devices. This lets Flutter users focus more on building and testing their apps, instead of dealing with downtime, network clogging, and other issues that come with in-house architecture.

Perfecto’s enterprise-grade cloud allows Flutter app developers to automate and scale their testing, so they can test more, test faster, and keep up with all the necessary test permutations needed to ensure broad coverage. And with AI-powered reporting, Flutter users can quickly identify and fix issues in their Flutter integration tests, maintaining the velocity needed to get quality apps to market—fast.

Perfecto is the ideal testing solution for testers who want to stay within the Flutter ecosystem—all while capturing the benefits of a trusted, powerful enterprise testing lab like Perfecto. Test your native mobile Flutter apps end-to-end with Perfecto to ensure high quality mobile experiences from start to finish.

Perforce Software announced the release of their 10th annual Java landscape survey — the 2022 Java Developer Productivity Report. Perforce Software is a provider of solutions to enterprise teams requiring productivity, visibility, and scale along the development lifecycle.

The 2022 Java Developer Productivity report details the top Java development tools, technologies, and trends shaping the Java ecosystem — and tracks the impact of these emerging trends on overall developer productivity.

Among key findings from the survey, the report details the impact of microservices and CI/CD on Java application build, commit, and deploy times. Among CI/CD users, 42% of respondents reported a build completion time of over five minutes. For larger organizations, that rate climbed to 58%. With most respondents noting that they commit code over five times per day, that developer downtime can add up quickly.

“This report shows there is still friction for teams adopting microservices and CI/CD, namely the time wasted while waiting on redeploy and commit times,” said Rod Cope, CTO at Perforce Software. “This friction will be top of mind for organizations who want to improve the efficiency of their Java teams — especially as recruiting and retaining skilled talent becomes increasingly difficult in the next few years. From a developer perspective, organizations need to provide the tools developers want, or risk them finding an organization that will.”

The report also measures the continued impact of microservices on Java application deployment times. The survey found that over 61% of respondents had experienced an increase in the startup time for their microservice-based applications within the last 12 months, with 14% of those experiencing an over 50% increase.

Reported deployment times were significant, too, with 44% of microservices application users reporting redeploy times of over five minutes per redeploy.

“Adopting a microservices architecture has a host of benefits for Java applications, but developer productivity is a concern without the right tools in place,” said Curtis Johnson, Product Manager at JRebel by Perforce. “With so many companies noting an increase in startup times for their microservices applications, this survey clearly shows the necessity of a tool like JRebel that can bypass that process entirely — regardless of whether the application is monolithic or microservice-based.”
