D-Wave Quantum Inc. and NTT DOCOMO Inc. reported a successful quantum optimization pilot that enhanced mobile network performance. By leveraging D-Wave’s annealing quantum computing technology, DOCOMO achieved a 15% reduction in paging signals during peak calling times, easing congestion at base stations. This improvement could lead to greater efficiency and reduced infrastructure costs. DOCOMO intends to roll out the hybrid-quantum solution across its Japanese branch offices in the near future.

D-Wave’s hybrid-quantum technology was used to optimize base station tracking areas — which are small geographical regions — that collectively send paging signals and process extensive historical data on device movements between stations. This helps DOCOMO predict future movement patterns and determine the best combination of base stations to re-establish connections as devices move between tracking areas.

The solution’s efficiency was demonstrated in pilot tests for certain areas in Japan (Tokai, Chugoku, Kyushu regions) when compared to classical methods. While a general-purpose solver took 27 hours, D-Wave’s hybrid solver completed the same task in just 40 seconds. The test results showed that quantum optimization led to a 15% reduction in paging signals, allowing approximately 1.2 times more terminals to be connected during periods of high call volume. This expanded bandwidth for base station resources has the potential to greatly reduce congestion, which would help the company maintain quality network traffic flow even during heavy usage.

“We anticipate that our quantum optimization strategy will further refine network efficiency, allowing us to maintain high-quality service without additional infrastructure investments as network traffic increases,” said Takatoshi Okagawa, director of research and development strategy at NTT DOCOMO. “With D-Wave’s hybrid quantum technology, we aim to set a new standard in the telecommunications industry for operational performance.”

“Telcos are faced with a slew of increasing operational complexities — from 5G implementation to ever-shifting consumer demands — and need novel solutions to maintain a competitive edge,” said Dr. Alan Baratz, CEO of D-Wave. “DOCOMO’s successful pilot sends a clear signal — that today’s quantum technologies are capable of solving telcos’ complex optimization problems, with the potential to elevate customer satisfaction, maintain network performance and mitigate rising infrastructure costs.”

Following its successful pilot, DOCOMO plans to deploy the annealing quantum computing solution into production at branch offices across Japan. The company is also exploring opportunities to apply quantum optimization across its business units including finance, retail, traffic and logistics, and construction.

A fast, reliable website can significantly enhance user experience, drive customer retention and boost sales. By contrast, a slow or unreliable website can spell disaster for business, detracting from revenue, brand value and user trust. Website performance plays a critical role in determining the outcome of a business—nearly half of all customers (46%) will not return to a website if they experience poor loading time, according to Tech Report. Slow or failed website loading can lead to missed business opportunities as potential customers abandon their visits. Dunn & Bradstreet recently found that 59% of Fortune 500 companies endure over one hour of downtime each week, averaging a weekly cost ranging from $643,200 to $1,056,000.

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a fundamental internet protocol that translates human-friendly domain names into unique Internet Protocol (IP) addresses — a process essential for directing users to the correct websites quickly and accurately. DNS helps maintain the seamless operation of the Internet, enabling efficient access to online resources. We only see the finished result of the page – a fully formed piece of content in a single place. However, beneath that are typically hundreds of DNS connections. During peak times such as Cyber Monday, Black Friday, Superbowl Sunday, or the upcoming Paris Olympics, DNS is the underrated superhero helping ensure all these connections happen at times of high demand.

There has been a significant gap, however, in the availability of reliable data on the performance of various DNS solutions. This is because measuring DNS performance is highly complex because real-world DNS connections are influenced by many variables, such as the local ISP connection, the distance between the user and server, or the resolver proximity. Moreover, since there is no universal standard for measuring DNS performance metrics, different methodologies across providers can lead to inconsistencies and make it difficult to compare results. Without access to standardized metrics, businesses often make investments in “good enough’ solutions, which reliably answer queries but not optimally.

Monitoring DNS performance is essential to maintaining a healthy, optimized online presence that prevents potential service disruptions or slowdowns for users. Collecting authoritative DNS performance data, as mentioned, however, is difficult. It requires continuous monitoring for real-time visibility and a distributed set of vantage points to ensure optimized user experiences across diverse locations. However, this can be resource-intensive and requires global, strategically positioned network infrastructure and advanced data processing capabilities.

IBM NS1 Connect and Catchpoint recently conducted a collaborative study to address this gap, aiming to provide more reliable and detailed DNS performance metrics to businesses and to compare the performance of authoritative DNS providers. The study measured DNS speeds for over 2,000 popular websites during peak traffic times in November and December (the peak holiday season), comparing the performance of authoritative DNS providers and self-hosted DNS architectures, ultimately uncovering substantial and surprising performance differences. The DNS performance study encompassed a wide range of data sources and geographic regions, leveraging Catchpoint’s global observability network to monitor DNS performance in real-time, providing extensive worldwide coverage and high granularity to determine key metrics such as the global average DNS response time, regional variations from different DNS providers, and variations by DNS provider types.

The key takeaways?

In numbers
• The average DNS response time across the websites we studied was 263ms.
• Response times in Europe and North America are significantly faster than in other regions, both hovering around 100ms.
• The slowest response times were in Oceania at around 350ms.
• Self-hosted DNS response time was 35% slower than the average global response time (an average difference of 141ms).
• The difference between self-hosted DNS and the leading DNS provider, IBM NS1 Connect, is self-hosted is 60% slower, a 244ms difference.

Don’t go it alone
Implement a managed DNS solution. A comparison of managed DNS options with self-hosted setups demonstrated distinct performance differences. Self-hosted DNS response time was in fact 35% slower than the average global response time across testing. Managed DNS solutions tended to provide more reliable and faster responses, enhancing overall user experience for businesses.

Consult a map
Be aware of regional variation. The study uncovered significant regional differences in DNS performance, with different continents showing varying results. North American and European countries performed best, due to factors such as higher infrastructure density, including a greater concentration of data centers and DNS servers, robust internet backbones, more connectivity between major cities, and closer proximity to DNS servers—factors an IT team should take into consideration when evaluating their individual performance.

Continuously improve
Create regular touchpoints for teams to review and optimize DNS infrastructure on an ongoing basis. Assess the difference between premium and self-hosted DNS services and between DNS providers. Performance can vary greatly across them all. Regularly measure and review DNS performance, identify bottlenecks and highlight areas where improvements are needed. This work will pay off in the long run.

Your users deserve a consistently positive experience, and with a robust DNS infrastructure in place, you can minimize downtime and enhance customer experience across the board. Monitoring DNS matters. Improvement of DNS performance directly contributes to better business performance by reducing potential slowdowns or service disruptions, and speeding up load times, leading to better user experiences. By leveraging the latest comprehensive data in the study, business can benchmark their DNS performance against reliable performance metrics, identify areas for improvement and ensure that website clicks convert to customers.

Neuron has launched the Neuron Pulse app for iOS. This app facilitates “zero-touch” Quality of Experience (QoE) measurement and monitoring from any iOS device. It allows Neuron’s customers to monitor their connectivity performance and QoE, providing an independent, comprehensive view of the digital experience on each ship, plane, or remote site within their operations.

In industries like aviation and maritime, measuring QoE accurately and at scale is challenging. Historically, companies have relied on manual testing and anecdotal feedback to gauge how their connectivity is working for people onboard. This approach is extremely limiting because every aircraft and vessel has its own unique set of performance indicators, based on factors such as time, geography, weather and location, which is a moving target – and it’s not realistic to have people manually testing Wi-Fi performance on all routes, at all times.

Neuron’s industry experts and engineers built AI and machine learning models that have proven to accurately predict QoE across multiple connectivity providers, orbits and/or networks, in real-time, across an entire fleet. And now, customers can get up-and-running using any iOS device.

The Neuron Pulse iOS app is a probe that can be quickly deployed to crew devices through a corporate MDM. The app only needs to be opened one time, and then it does all the work behind the scenes. That includes using AI and machine learning to pull unique aircraft or vessel information, without the need for manual input. For example, in aviation, it intelligently captures details such as flight number, tail number, route, airport codes and more to accurately label and correlate all connectivity performance and QoE data. This data is then translated into analytics dashboards that customers can view in the Neuron portal and use to make better operational decisions.

“We built the Neuron Pulse ‘Zero-Touch’ iOS app with the end-user in mind, aiming to provide a seamless experience for our customers and their crew,” said Jonathan Kader, VP of product at Neuron. “By eliminating the need for manual input and using automatic data collection, the crew can focus on safety and taking care of their customers, while the app does the work of capturing the data our customers need to enhance their digital operations.”

Designed with privacy in mind, the Neuron Pulse iOS app acts as if it’s another user on the network – but at a much lower bandwidth. It only starts measuring and monitoring QoE when the crew device connects to the target network/SSID. Once the trip is complete, it stops tracking and sits idle until the target network is powered back on for the next trip. It does not collect any crew or passenger personal data, or have visibility into what they are doing on their devices.

The iOS app is one of two Neuron Pulse deployment methods that customers can use today, depending on their needs. In lieu of the app, customers can choose to deploy Neuron Pulse via their onboard server, working in collaboration with their connectivity provider(s). Each deployment method consumes approximately the same amount of bandwidth and generates similar datasets that can then be viewed by customers in their Neuron portal. The connectivity performance and QoE data captured by Neuron Pulse is created and owned by each customer.

Catchpoint announced the release of a powerful, free live Global Internet Outage Map. This AI-powered dashboard offers a real-time overview of the health of hundreds of global internet services essential to daily life.

The free, interactive tool provides anyone with quick visibility into outages that may be impacting businesses, sites, or other internet services. The Live Internet Outage Map is available to everyone – no registration required – and provides real-time, global data from the past 24 hours, sampling hundreds of services monitored by Catchpoint’s powerful Internet Sonar capability, which provides deeper insights for paying customers.

The global health map provides valuable insights into the health of many Internet services and platforms, including social media (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.), eCommerce (Amazon, Apple, Walmart, etc.), finance (Visa, PayPal, Bank of America, etc.), entertainment (Netflix, Disney Plus, Spotify, etc.), travel (airlines, hotels, booking sites, etc.), and more. This access empowers users with critical, up-to-the-minute information on Internet performance and stability around the world.

The Live Internet Outage Map empowers users to proactively respond to outages that could disrupt business operations. Unlike other trackers that rely on delayed, crowd-sourced reports, Catchpoint’s map utilizes data from millions of real-time tests conducted on the world’s largest independent active observability network. This results in an AI-powered real-time, interactive status report.

Key Benefits of the Live Internet Outage Map:

  • Real Data, Not Crowd-Sourced: The map relies on comprehensive, real-time data from advanced tests, instead of subjective user reports, ensuring accuracy and reliability free from human error.
  • Live Updates with No Delay: Users receive immediate outage information without waiting for third-party providers to post (often) delayed reports, providing timely insights when they are needed most.
  • Accuracy from Millions of Tests and Billions of Data Points: Our data is derived from numerous tests run on Catchpoint’s industry-leading Global Observability Network and curated by our advanced AI correlation engine, a powerful combination unmatched by any other service.
  • Reduction of False Positives: Internet Sonar’s AI analytics engine carefully examines outage data to validate results, avoiding inaccuracies that can mislead decision-making.

Global Internet Leaders – including the top CDNs, ISPs, cloud hyperscalers, and online retailers – rely on Catchpoint Internet Performance Monitoring to run their business and to ensure the performance and resilience of their services. The Internet Outage Map relies on the same technology to provide accurate, real-time data to everyone.

“With the release of our Live Internet Outages Map, Catchpoint is delighted to be able to offer to the community for free, real-time, global insights into the health of some of the world’s biggest Internet platforms, from Facebook to Amazon,” said Mehdi Daoudi, CEO of Catchpoint. “By providing a subset of the features from Internet Sonar, we hope to provide businesses the insights they need to answer the question, ‘Is it me or something else?’ Visibility into the health of Internet Infrastructure, SaaS, and MarTech is key to staying competitive.”

The full version of Internet Sonar monitors thousands of additional Internet services in additional categories, including Internet Infrastructure (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, etc.), SaaS (AlaaS, UCaaS, SECaS, etc.), Marketing Technology (analytics, ad serving, video, etc.), API and Developer Tools and more. The full platform also allows for customizable timeframes, generates detailed notifications, and integrates seamlessly with various systems via webhook or API. These alerts significantly reduce Mean Time to Identification (MTTI) and Mean Time to Resolution (MTTR), streamlining incident diagnosis and resolution.
