Parallels has announced that Parallels RAS (Remote Application Server) is now available in the Microsoft Azure Marketplace. This allows Parallels customers to benefit from the efficient and reliable Azure cloud platform, with simplified deployment and management.

As organizations continue to navigate an evolving landscape, the demand for solutions supporting remote workforces and efficient application delivery has never been higher. Parallels RAS represents one such solution, and now that it can be purchased and deployed through Microsoft Azure Marketplace, additional options emerge for partners to extend this delivery to customers wishing to better deploy and manage their remote desktop and application infrastructure.

“With Parallels RAS now available in the Azure Marketplace, organizations worldwide can experience enhanced accessibility,” said Prashant Ketkar, Chief Product and Technology Officer for Parallels. “Listing Parallels RAS as a managed app alongside the existing BYOL options, simplifies the deployment process, making it easier for organizations to find, adopt, and integrate Parallels RAS directly from the Azure Marketplace. This move optimizes operations and removes barriers to adoption, ensuring a smoother and more efficient implementation.”

Deploying Parallels RAS within Azure Marketplace offers a significant advantage: complete automation. This streamlined process handles the initial setup of a full Parallels RAS infrastructure in the customer’s Azure subscription. It automates the deployment of infrastructure components, such as Connection Brokers, Secure Gateways, and Load Balancers, all customizable to the user’s preferences.

Furthermore, integration with Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) can automatically be configured. This allows organizations to jump start their Azure Virtual Desktop deployment, take advantage of all the benefits Azure Virtual Desktop provides, and get all the enhancements Parallels RAS bring to this platform.

During the automated deployment, a new pay-as-you-go license is configured, meaning there is no need to buy Parallels RAS licenses separately. With an Azure Marketplace deployment of Parallels RAS, organizations automatically pay for usage based on the highest concurrency each month, billed through Azure Marketplace.

Additionally, customers may be eligible to debit their existing Microsoft cloud commitment to purchase offers like this in Azure Marketplace. This alignment with existing cloud consumption commitments provides businesses with an incentive to leverage Parallels RAS on Microsoft Azure, optimizing IT spending while benefiting from its advanced features.

Tailored, private offers by partners

With Parallels RAS now available as a transactable solution within the Azure Marketplace, partners, such as Cloud Solution Providers, can now work together with Parallels to create unique offers for their customers and help promote revenue growth. A Multi-Party Private Offer (MPO) allows partners to create personalized offers, provide added value, add custom payouts, and sell directly to Microsoft customers with simplified selling through the marketplace.

A suggested private offer could be an extended offer with Parallels RAS as the secure application and desktop delivery solution, included with professional services for migration, consultancy and IT training from value-added partners.

Jake Zborowski, General Manager, Microsoft Azure Platform at Microsoft Corp., said, “We welcome Parallels RAS to Azure Marketplace, where global customers can find, try, and buy from among thousands of partner solutions. Thanks to trusted partners like Parallels, Azure Marketplace is part of a cloud marketplace landscape predicted to grow revenue 500% from 2022 to 2025.

The Azure Marketplace is an online market for buying and selling cloud solutions certified to run on Azure. The Azure Marketplace helps connect companies seeking innovative, cloud-based solutions with partners who have developed solutions that are ready to use.

Parallels announced its recognition as a Visionary in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Desktop as a Service. After being listed as an Honorable Mention in the 2023 report, this marks the first time Parallels has been included as a positioned vendor within the Magic Quadrant.

Parallels DaaS is a cloud-native, Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) solution that offers users secure and seamless access to their virtual applications and desktop environments anytime, anywhere. Parallels is identified as a Visionary in Gartner’s evaluation for its Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision.

While Parallels DaaS is a new offering, it benefits from Parallels’ extensive experience in Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) through its more mature Parallels RAS (Remote Application Server) solution. Parallels RAS (Remote Application Server) is a flexible virtual application and desktop delivery solution providing a unified management platform that enables on-premises VDI, hybrid environments, cloud PCs, and physical endpoints.

A Gartner Magic Quadrant is a culmination of research in a specific market, giving end users a wide-angle view of the relative positions of the market’s competitors.

“We believe that our position as a Visionary in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Desktop as a Service is not only an accomplishment for Parallels, but also a testament to our commitment to simplifying the management of virtual machines and meeting the demands of the market,” said Prashant Ketkar, CTO at Parallels. “With Parallels DaaS, organizations receive an intuitive, user-friendly solution with simple licensing without sacrificing scalability and security.”

Parallels has unveiled Parallels Desktop 20 for Mac, a major release featuring new AI capabilities, including secure, downloadable AI-ready virtual machines that can be managed offline to simplify AI application development. It is fully compatible with macOS Sequoia and Windows 11 24H2 and introduces a management portal in the new Enterprise Edition, along with several updates for Windows, macOS, and Linux virtual machines.

Parallels Desktop is the only virtualization solution authorized by Microsoft to run Windows in a virtualized environment on Apple silicon. This gives developers and users choice across their favorite user and development environments.

“As PCs become more AI-capable, we believe AI will soon be standard on every desktop. This shift challenges developers to update their applications to fully leverage AI-enabled PCs,” said Prashant Ketkar, CTO at Parallels. “That’s why we created the Parallels AI Package: to equip development teams—whether experts or beginners—with accessible AI models and code suggestions. This enables ISVs to build AI-enabled applications in minutes, significantly boosting productivity for every software development team using a Mac.”

Key highlights of Parallels Desktop 20 include:

  • New Parallels AI Package*: To make AI development more accessible, this all-in-one solution includes a virtual machine pre-loaded with 14 AI development toolsets, sample code, and instructions, enabling developers to experiment with and deploy AI quickly. With just a click, users can download the Parallels virtual machine ready for AI and run a third-party small language model inside it, while completely disconnected from the Internet. The package offers offline, secure environments and allows users to customize resources and disable network access for enhanced privacy.
  • macOS Sequoia Compatibility: Users can enjoy Apple’s new AI-powered Writing Tools with Windows apps, sign in to Apple ID in macOS virtual machines on Apple silicon, and more (available when macOS Sequoia is released).
  • Windows 11 24H2 Support: Optimizations ensure users’ workflows remain uninterrupted while running legacy Windows apps which get up to an 80% performance boost** for some workloads thanks to the improved Prism emulator built into Windows 11 on Arm.
  • Seamless compatibility with Windows applications through new shared folders technology: Improves performance with a variety of apps and installers, such as Mathematica or NinjaTrader, and delivers up to 4x faster operations*** on Mac files in Linux VMs.

For Businesses:

  • New Enterprise Edition including Management Portal: The most advanced offering yet, designed for organizations needing greater control, visibility, and efficiency in managing Parallels Desktop virtual machines and security policies. The new Edition unlocks, advanced licensing option that supports both SSO and volume license, premium support and onboarding.
  • SOC 2 Report: Parallels Desktop has attained a SOC 2 Type 2 report and undergoes regular third-party penetration testing, supporting upholding standards for security and reliability.

For IT Pros and Developers:

  • Enhanced DevOps Services: Build software in Windows, Linux and macOS VMs on Macs anywhere.
  • Enhanced Visual Studio Code Extension: Simplifies access to the AI package and integrates Microsoft Copilot, allowing users to control virtual machines using natural language.
  • Snapshots and OCR-powered Packer: Enhanced features for macOS virtual machines on Apple Silicon Macs.

Parallels has unveiled the introduction of Parallels DaaS, a new Desktop-as-a-Service cloud computing solution designed for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs)* and the managed service providers (MSPs) that support them.

Parallels DaaS is tailored to assist organizations with the quick adoption of a cloud-first approach to delivering apps and desktops to any Internet-connected devices for their remote and hybrid workforces. What makes Parallels DaaS stand out is that this DaaS solution doesn’t require specialized IT or VDI knowledge. By removing the barriers of technical complexity, the solution offers enterprise-grade technology with unmatched ease of use at a competitive price point.

“Parallels has been at the forefront of simplifying IT for end users through innovative virtualization solutions. Today marks a milestone as we launch Parallels DaaS, a fully managed Desktop and Application delivery solution that transforms complex and costly IT setups to deliver VDI/EUC solutions,” stated Prashant Ketkar, Chief Technology and Product Officer, Parallels. “With the release of Parallels DaaS, customers and partners can rely on Parallels as a strong alternative in the market, meeting their remote desktop or application delivery needs. We are committed to providing our partners and customers across all geographies with the choice and flexibility they need to deploy on-premises, in the cloud, or hybrid with Parallels.”

Parallels’ extensive portfolio of solutions is designed to cater to diverse organizational needs, whether it’s delivering applications and desktops from the cloud with Parallels DaaS, on-premises, through a hybrid approach with Parallels RAS, or directly on the device with Parallels Desktop.

According to a recent survey of leading IT professionals, conducted by Parallels, 78% plan to adopt a DaaS solution by 2025, highlighting its increasing popularity. In a market where talent is scarce and demand is high, Parallels DaaS provides a simple, scalable, and cost-effective solution that frees organizations from the burden of managing and maintaining virtual desktops.

“Supporting a hybrid workforce remains a complex challenge, especially in the small-medium business market,” said Shannon Kalvar, IDC Research Director. “Affordable Desktop-as-a-Service solutions like Parallels DaaS, with their extensive automation and known-good configurations, help reduce that complexity, allowing employees to focus on serving new and existing customers.”

The first version of Parallels DaaS introduces several key features that SMBs can leverage, including:

  • Fast time to value, onboarding in under 20 minutes: With the intuitive and modern admin portal, apps can be deployed, and new users can be set up with just a few clicks, resulting in a fast time to value (TTV). End users get immediate access to applications and desktops from any device.
    • In less than 20 minutes, organizations can onboard Parallels DaaS**
    • In less than 10 minutes, a new app or desktop can be deployed.
    • In less than a minute, end users can access the apps or desktops deployed in DaaS – as quickly as accessing emails in a browser.
  • Competitive TCO: Parallels DaaS is available at a competitive TCO (total cost of ownership) and offers a predictable subscription-based model. Designed in the cloud, it minimizes IT management overhead and eliminates infrastructure complexity. Plus, companies can benefit from the built-in autoscaling feature for efficient management of inactive users.
  • Integrated data security: Parallels DaaS has a unique cloud-native architecture which separates the control and data layers ensuring that the data stays in the customer’s environment.
  • Rapidly scaling up or down: Parallels DaaS hosts a modern cloud-native architecture allowing for efficient use of cloud resources. Companies can rapidly scale desktop deployments up or down to meet changing demands.

Alludo announced that it has renamed its secure remote access solution Parallels Awingu to Parallels Secure Workspace. Awingu was acquired last year and the renaming marks a logical next step, firmly establishing Parallels Secure Workspace as a fully-fledged member of the Parallels family, which includes Parallels Desktop, Parallels RAS, Parallels Toolbox, and Parallels Access.

“Hybrid and remote work are here to stay, and Parallels Secure Workspace enables organizations to give their employees secure access to the applications they depend on, whether they’re in a boardroom, at the airport, or their home office,” said Christa Quarles, CEO of Alludo. “This renaming is just one step of Parallels’ security journey as we continue our mission to empower knowledge workers’ anywhere, anytime productivity by improving the secure-remote-access experience.”

The renaming of the product also underscores Parallels’ focus on the evolving market. According to a recent cybersecurity report, 41% of IT professionals reported a security breach within the last 12 months, while a substantial 78% expressed their intent to significantly or moderately increase security budgets in the coming year. This growing emphasis on security stresses the demand for safe and user-friendly solutions, a need that Parallels Secure Workspace effectively addresses.

“Parallels Secure Workspace, now formerly Awingu, has been a pioneer in remote access solutions. With specific security-focused capabilities they are aligning with the future needs of customers in a globally dispersed and heavily remote workforce,” said Dr. Chase Cunningham, Dr. ZeroTrust. “I have followed Awingu’s journey closely since 2017, and this renaming aligns with their customers’ and future customers’ needs and is a watershed moment for the company.”

Parallels Secure Workspace, which has been under development since 2011 in Belgium, distinguishes itself by being “clientless,” operating entirely within the web browser to offer effortless access to virtual apps, desktops, files, SaaS applications, and cloud storage anywhere, on any device. Both mid-market and large enterprises choose this secure remote access solution, not only for its fast deployment within hours, but also as it presents a more secure alternative to traditional VPNs. It effectively supports companies with their Zero Trust security initiatives, secure BYOD programs, remote work arrangements, and controlled contractor access.

As Awingu transitions to Parallels Secure Workspace, the product itself will remain unchanged, ensuring a smooth experience for all users without any required actions. Default branding for fresh installs in line with the Parallels brand will also be introduced. For more information on upgrading to the latest version, please visit our website HERE. ]]>
Parallels announced findings from its 2023 Hybrid Cloud Survey, conducted among IT professionals. A hybrid cloud setup is a combination of public clouds, private clouds, and on-premises infrastructures used together by organizations to store, manage, and run their data and applications.

The Parallels research revealed that the ease of talent search plays a pivotal role in driving the adoption of the hybrid cloud. In fact, a significant majority of IT professionals (62%) find a lack of cloud management skills gaps to be a barrier to growth, an issue even more prevalent in mid-size* companies (72%).

To cope, companies are increasing their use of hybrid cloud infrastructure. Nearly two-thirds of the survey respondents, 64%, had already implemented a hybrid approach, and 38% of all respondents plan to further embrace a hybrid cloud approach in the next year.

The research also looked at the usage of the public cloud, uncovering that the majority derive most value from it. However, within large enterprises, 18% of respondents admit to not getting the most value out of the public cloud. 11% across all companies find themselves in a similar position. Among this group of respondents, 41% cite concerns over the complexity of migrating to the public cloud. This challenge is further exacerbated by a lack of in-house cloud expertise gaps (33%) and IT recruiting challenges (15%).

While it’s true that cloud use is not a ‘one size fits all’ proposition, it is clear that a hybrid cloud model is preferred by companies, both large and small,” said Prashant Ketkar, Chief Technology & Product Officer, Alludo. “As organizations struggle to find and retain the talent they need to manage complex cloud implementations, hybrid cloud can be the solution. By using a more incremental cloud adoption approach, supported by easy-to-manage software solutions that are enhanced with automation and security, IT professionals can realize the flexibility and cost savings they want from the cloud, without specialized cloud management expertise.”

“IDC’s xOps Census and Forecast 2022 to 2027 shows that the current gaps are of approximately 1.5 million IT professionals worldwide has already made it challenging for small and medium businesses to get the resources they need, driving a need for new innovation and infrastructure solutions”, said Shannon Kalvar, IDC Research Director. “Those gaps will expand to almost 8 million IT professionals worldwide by 2027 due to retirements and a lack of new entrants, forcing the industry to adopt entirely new ways of getting work done.”

Hybrid Cloud for Hybrid Work

The Parallels research found that hybrid cloud infrastructure is the most prevalent model for supporting a hybrid workforce. Out of the 83% of respondents who currently work in a hybrid (working both remote and in the office) structure, 82% use the hybrid cloud.

The top five benefits reported for the use of hybrid cloud, compared to 100% public cloud or 100% on-premises infrastructure, are:

  • Increased flexibility (49%)
  • Improved security (46%)
  • Cost savings (45%)
  • Increased reliability (44%)
  • Scalability (40%)
Legacy Applications Persist

The continued significance of legacy applications is also contributing to the ongoing adoption of hybrid cloud. Nearly all (96%) of the IT professionals surveyed claim that they currently need legacy Windows and Linux applications, and almost half (49%) report that they will need to continue to access these legacy applications more than five years from now.

This is especially true for smaller companies with 54% signifying this is very important. Only 4% of those surveyed reported that they did not use any legacy applications. A hybrid cloud approach helps overcome the legacy application challenge by enabling incremental changes to the IT infrastructure, without a wholesale upgrade to applications that may not be cloud ready.

Parallels enables the simplified adoption of a hybrid cloud approach with its Parallels RAS (Remote Application Server) solution. The latest release of Parallels RAS enhances automation and security for end-user computing in a hybrid cloud environment while enabling cost efficiency and saving IT administration time in environments including Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD). Survey Methodology

Parallels’ Hybrid Cloud Survey was conducted in July 2023 with data from 805 IT professionals that are using the public cloud to some extent in U.S., UK and Germany. To see the full results of the study, click HERE.

*Note: Mid-size companies are defined as those with 500 to 1,999 employees.
